Classic Cottage Pie

// Who doesn’t love some beef mince, gravy and golden potato mash? This is a quick and easy recipe to whip up. This is one of Gordan Ramsay’s classics but the only difference is we will using beef instead of lamb mince for this recipe. Don’t forget to check out how I’ve modified the recipe you can eat it too.

  • Honest Prep Time: 30 Minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 Minutes
  • Level Of Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients

  • Beef mince
  • Russet potatoes
  • 2 Tb olive oil
  • onion
  • carrot
  • garlic
  • worcestershire sauce
  • tomato puree
  • red wine
  • thyme
  • rosemary
  • salt & pepper
  • parmesan cheese
  • 2 egg yolks

Instructions

  1. First thing to do is heat up your oven to 180 degrees celcius
  2. Heat up a pot with a bit of cooking spray and begin cooking the beef mince until it’s brown.
  3. Once the fat has rendered off, grate in onion, carrot and garlic and continue cooking until caramelized.
  4. Add in the worcestershire sauce and tomato puree. Continue mixing until the beef mince is sticky.
  5. De-glaze the pan with red wine, thyme and rosemary. Continue cooking until the alcohol in the red wine is evapourated.
  6. Add in your chicken stock, and cook it out for 3-4 minutes until you have a really sticky beef mince mixture.
  7. Heat up a separate pot, bring the water to boil, season and then add in your potatoes. Once cooked, mash the potatoes, add the egg yolk and season again. The egg yolk is what’s going to give that amazing golden colour.
  8. Mix in half of your parmesan cheese to the mash.
  9. Add your beef mince to a small baking bowl, top with the mash and then sprinkle the rest of the parmesan on top.
  10. Create flakes on the surface of the mash so that you get these tiny crispy bits.
  11. Bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes. Serve.

My Thoughts

The main ingredients you need to watch out for are the potatoes, beef mince, red wine, the egg yolk and the parmesan cheese. Make sure you use oil spray to coat the pan.

This recipe starts off at 500 calories and not lower because is moderately calorie dense.

I recommend you have lean beef mince 1-2 times per week.
